For almost half a century, the name Kronos has been synonomous with groundbreaking and viscerally emotive string compositions. San Francisco’s globally renowned string quartet engaged First Person to design the web experience which would contain and share their legacy.

50 for the Future» is the ambitious ongoing project of Kronos Quartet and the Kronos Performing Arts Association. Drawing on an international assembly of composers, both established and up-and-coming, the organization has commissioned fifty original works with the intent of making the scores and notation freely available to aspiring string musicians and orchestras everywhere.
Each composition will be accompanied by instructional videos, interviews and insights from the composers, and high-quality recordings of Kronos Quartet performing the repertoire.
The interactive team at First Person set to work on the architecture and content organization of the website. My job as art director was to bring the website to life with a strong visual identity. We started with a unique logo for the project that would become the basis for the site's overall aesthetic.
Playing off the theme of an “ark”, or a vessel which would house the fifty compositions for years to come, we leaned into a warm and organic aesthetic which kept the avant-garde 45º angle derived from the logo.
Kronos was admanat that they did not want any steretypical “classical” imagery in the design, so tropes like notation lines, treble clefs, recognizable string instruments and black suits and bow ties were all left on the bench. The quartet has always embraced the rock star spirit of an experimental, progressive project, and we knew the branding had to embody that.
In addition to the overall identity of the 50FTF project, we wanted to establish a small vein of graphic individuality for each composition. This meant creating a unique “cover” for each piece that would accompany it across the internet, particularly on Soundcloud and other platforms where a thumbail visual was needed.
